Normally, to project a Youtube video in SL some intemediate knowledge that not everyone has is required. Besides you need rights on the land to modify land parameters, something that usually is and should be forbbiden for most residents. The process is so cumbersome that it discourages many teachers from using Youtube videos in their in-world classes. The Video Box simplifies the projection of videos from YouTube in Second Life. It's designed to interact with any resident through the chat window. After it's installed, no further configuration is needed, neither any change to parameters using the SL menu. In this way, teachers could seize the advantages of using Youtube videos for educational purposes inside Second Life.

What It Is

#3: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:48

The Video Box is an interface for residents who want to project a YouTube Video on a screen in Second Life.

Target User

#4: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:48

Residents in general who want to experience the projection of a video in an inmersive way. Teachers and students who need to share videos in-world for educational purposes.

What It Does

#5: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:48

Automatically sets the land parameters necessary to project a Youtube video inside Second Life. Then the video is proyected onto any screen.

How It Works

#6: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:48
  • Gives instructions through the public chat channel when clicked.
  • Gets the URL of a Youtube video from the public chat channel from any resident that is in the chat range, one at a time.
  • The YouTube video specified is projected onto all surfaces that have as a texture the selected texture in land profile.

The Video Box has to be installed in the land by someone belonging to the group that owns the land (for example in Muvenation Sim the group is Muvenation) and with the rights to create objects, modify media parameters and deed objects to the group. This person has to activate the group in the groups tab in her profile before rezzing the Video Box in the land. After rezzing the Video Box  the group name will be shown in the Video Box profile (edit window, general tab). Then you have to check the "Share with a Group" box and "Deed" it to the group using the "Deed" button. In this way the Video Box will acquire the necessary rights to automatically change the necessary parameters to project a Youtube Video in the region.

After that you have to prepare a screen to project the Youtube videos. To explain how Second Life permits us to watch a video in-world I use the metaphor "antenna." An "antenna" is in this case a specific texture that we define in the land profile (menu World/About Land/Media). This should be done by a resident with the rights to change that texture in the profile. You may select any texture from your inventory. I suggest to use a texture with a logo of the institution that owns the land because this will be the texture that will appear in the landmark when someone finds the land using the search tool. After the texture was selected, any object in the land with the same texture defined as "antenna" will show over it the video that is being projected.

Experience of Tool

#11: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:48

I have been using and sharing Youtube Videos  in-world for a while since I found the [ZONE] Video Box. . It is one of the most stunning experiences in Second Life. Why? There is a difference between giving or receiving a link of a Youtube from a friend and watching it alone in your PC and using the same link in-world with our friend, at the same time in the same place. The advantages of the immersive experience in Second Life allows the use of  videos for educational purposes. This Video Box simplifies the way to project a Youtube video, you just have to touch it and paste and Youtube URL in the chat window. If you invite a group of students to share the experiencie of a video about  a tutorial, lecture or  demostration then they will quickly share with you their findings in Youtube and the outcomes of that experience would be amazing. Go to Youtube (http://youtube.com), search a video that matches your educational objectives, copy it's URL and paste it in SL, in your chat window. The Video Box will surprise you.
