When you get to project a video in Second Life the only way you have to pause and play it again is using the media button in the media controller that we have in the buttons bar at the  bottom right of the SL Viewer. This control has to be used by each resident that is watching the video. This is a problem when the teacher needs to pause the video in a specific part of the video to comment on something or assign a task in the middle of the class. The only way the teacher has is to ask each of the students to click the "pause" button of the media control. However, this means that all students would have to press the button at the same time. What the teachers need in this situation is to syncronize the pause and play of all the participants.

What It Is

#3: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:17

The Tv Player is a screen with a set of controls that permit, from inside Second Life, to manipulate the media controls of the SL Viewer of all the attendees of a video projection.

Target User

#4: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:17

Residents, teachers and students who need to share videos in-world for educational purposes in a collaborative way.

What It Does

#5: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:17

Manipulates from in-world the media controls (Play, Pause and Stop) of the SL Viewer of all the attendees of a video projection.

How It Works

#6: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:21

Once the video is being projected:

  • If you press the Pause button, the video will be paused for all attendees.
  • If you press the Stop button, the video will be stopped for all attendees.
  • If you press the Play button, the video will start again after a Pause or restart again after a Stop.

The TV Player has to be installed in the land by someone belonging to the group that owns the land (for example in Muvenation Sim the group is Muvenation) and with the rights to create objects, modify media parameters and deed objects to the group. This person has to activate the group in the groups tab in his/her profile before rezzing the TV Player in the land. After rezzing the TV Player the group name will be shown in the TV Player profile (edit window, general tab). Then you have to check the "Share with a Group" box and "Deed" it to the group using the "Deed" button. In this way the TV Player will acquire the necessary rights to manipulate the media control of the SL Viewer of all the attendants.

After that you have to prepare the TV Player screen to project the Youtube videos. To explain in a simple way how Second Life permits us to watch a video in-world we can use the metaphor of an antenna. An "antenna" is in this case a specific texture that is defined in the land profile (menu World/About Land/Media). I suggest to use a texture with a logo of the institution that owns the land because this will be the texture that will appear in the landmark when someone finds the land using the search tool. The texture to change should only be  from the screen prim of the TV Player (use the select texture option in the Edit window). After the texture is selected, the TV Player will project the video selected for that land.

Experience of Tool

#11: loiuse - 31 July, 2009 - 19:22

I have been using  and sharing Youtube Videos in-world for a while. It is one of the most stunning experiences in Second Life. But then you realize that it's not a projection from inside Second Life; the way it works is simulating an in-world projection when it is really a local video streaming that is simulated as been transmitted from Second Life. The problem with this is that every streaming in each of the attendees´ computer is running at different times. In my experience with students I realized very soon that what I needed was to syncronize all those streamings. The TV Player helped me to get that seamlessly. I just have to press Pause in the middle of a video and all the attendants will experiment the same pause in their local streaming. This is necessary in the different possibilities of Second Life, such as a workshop in which the teacher is using a video as an educational resource.
