About

LLL3D is a Multilateral Project in the Transversal Programme of the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme. The project aims to supporting European practitioners (individuals as well as the existing communities) that work in the field of education and training using Second Life within a Lifelong learning perspective.

From the perspective of the user (the major beneficiary of our actions), it is necessary not only to provide evidence of the pedagogical potential of this kind of environments, but also to explore and explain the “learning scenarios”1 in which MUVEs might successfully operate.

In the framework of the LLL3D project, the working group of eight partners from Germany, Belgium, Italy, United Kingdom, France, Slovenia and Spain, have created a set of services and tools in order to provide guidance to all practitioners who are interested in exploring the potential of Second Life for educational purposes, and learning how to use this environment.

In accordance with the goals of the LLL3D project, we have developed the following integrated tools, some of which operate both on our island in SL and others elsewhere.

On the island:

A common space, called the Bazaar, where users can meet and interact with other members (who come from different projects, and communities) and share their experiences in exploring the educational potential of MUVEs for educational purposes. In this space a skilled person will be present to guide users using a “hands on” approach and there will also be an offline tutorial for users to consult during their own learning process. Meanwhile the Bazaar site (see  below) will be the space where work shops (on the use of certain tools and services), seminars (on certain topics / cases / teaching needs), and events will be organized.

In-world links to the best practices that have been analysed in the project. Thanks to a selected series of links the users will have an exhaustive and updated framework of best practices.

Elsewhere

The website is designed to be a common space for the sharing of tools and the promotion of the project, activities, news/events but also the dissemination of the main results and outputs of the project.

A structured grid of “learning scenarios” for the identification of best practices associated with the use of MUVEs in Lifelong Learning. The cases are classified by target group and the methodologies addressed.

The Bazaar site. It represents a reference point designed to engage and support the user during and after their learning experiences in SL (within the island). This tool provides a feedback system which is structured like a forum, in which the user not only can find answers to his/her questions; but also guidance” that helps the participants to contextualize, for instance, how a particular tool works and in which context, how it looks and so on.

The LLL3D project is contributing to the establishment of a European research and practice area in Lifelong Learning, paying attention to the promotion of general awareness of the potential of MUVEs, dissemination and to increasing the acceptance of MUVEs as a highly promising cutting-edge technology for online learning.
